MMSBC Lives!

I knew I had to make this announcement today, and I think that’s why I didn’t sleep very well. At 4AM this morning I was shuffling around words and phrases in my heard as to how I would open this letter. Sadly, I don’t quite remember exactly how it went, but I remember it being really good and telling myself not to forget it. I forgot most of it, but I’m pretty sure it was supposed to go something like this…

When you have children, you want what’s best for your them. You gave birth to them, you gave them life, and you want to see them grow and succeed. Imagine sending your child to college without knowing how to read…it’s backwards. That’s kind of a stupid example, but I swear I thought of something that sounded better as I was trying to force myself back to sleep this morning. What I’m trying to say is, I gave life to an idea, and I got way too far in over my head. I have a solution now, as to how O make things right, and give my child what I know is best. This is getting really stupid. Okay, what I’m saying is I had a great idea for a feature film, tried to make it on a shoestring budget, ran out of money, and realized two years later that it should have been a graphic novel all along.

There you have it folks, MMSBC is now under development as a graphic novel.

I guess there is no other way to put it. I did things backwards. Making movies has always been an extreme obsession of mine. Up until I was ready to make MMSBC, (which is Monster Management Security Bureau of Cincinnati, for those who do not know) the films of Main Moon (my production company) were just really silly at best. Our first flick, The Looney Norman Big Fish Movie, was a Blair Witch style mockumentary that was a joke about three years too late. Though only funny to about five people on the planet, the film stands out as a success to me because it was the first film that we actually completed. On top of that, we even managed to have a public screening. Following Looney were a couple of short black and white stories about girlfriends and working in arcades, which were met with open arms by a wider audience, and opened the door for me to meet some other fine film makers and actors.

MMSBC was the brainchild of myself and my good pal “Booty” Josh Treadway. I’m not 100 percent sure how, but we got to talking about Sentai as a television genre in Japan. For those uneducated to the brand, Sentai is what we know in the US as Power Rangers or Ultraman. Spandex clad heroes, giant robots, and giant monsters. By the time Power Rangers hit big in the US, I was honestly probably at an age where it wasn’t that cool to watch the show, but I was still hooked. I think it was around the time that a boy would begin taking an interest in ladies, and I was definitely interested in Amy Jo Johnson. I especially loved Power Rangers knock off shows like VR Troopers. My favorite is without a doubt the USA Networks Tattooed Teenage Alien Fighters from Beverly Hills! Say that even one time fast! There was something undeniably charming about the mountain of cheese these shows put fourth, and I wanted in on it.

What if Sentai teams were a normal thing in Japan, and each major US city was beginning to adopt a squad?

That was my original outline for a Sentai film back in 2005, when pre production consisted of figuring out how to make helmets out of paper mache. As time passed, and the idea sat on the back burner, I pitched the idea to an actress who had worked on a short film I directed called Bizarre Love Triangle. Her brash and abrasive attitude and lust for success led me to hire her as my producer. This was a girl who got things done. She was rude, vulgar…what am I saying? Why did I feel like this would get me anywhere? It’s simple. She believed in me. She believed in me when no one else would. By 2006, Main Moon was suffering. We didn’t have a TV show anymore, Josh was moving to Florida, Andy was about to get married…it was truly on it’s last leg. I had felt all kinds of pressure coming at me to quit chasing my dreams and pack up everything and kick the Peter Pan syndrome. I was really torn at this point in my life, and because I suppose every good story pulls from real life, this turning point set the stage for the new and improved MMSBC screenplay. To save you from the boring real life version, I’ll just say, everything that was unfolding in the script, happened to manifest in real life as the movie was being made. The difference was I didn’t have super powers to fend off the evil, and I was somewhat defeated in the end. There are several reasons why the film was unable to be completed, and I could write a book on that problem alone.

This is the best possible way to tell my story, and I have met some amazing and talented artists to help me pull of this vision. Due to a few things still being finalized as far as my staff goes, I can tell you that I have done the appropriate edits to the screenplay, and the lead artist is my former student, the phenomenal Chad Schoettle. Chad is a Cincinnati native, who is hands down the most talented comic book artist I have ever met and had the privilege to call a friend. This is the best thing for my story, and the best thing for the fans, who after years of teases, will finally get to see this idea completed in some way shape or form. MMSBC lives. Now if only someone would buy the movie rights…

Reporters were given a rare opportunity this week to see a piece of cinematic history that has laid hidden and thought to be lost for over a year. Those lost scenes came from the classic sci-fi film “MMSBC.”

All this time the can containing the scenes were sitting in the archives of a museum in Buenos Aires, the capital and largest city of Argentina. Investigation showed that before finding its way to the museum the lost original version of the movie, was part of a collector’s private film library and contains scenes never before viewed by an open audience.

According to museum director Paula Felix-Didier, this is the only copy of Ricky’s lost footage and as such is absolutely priceless.

The film may be remade and include these never-before-seen sections, however, won’t be leaving Argentina anytime soon.

“The film hasn’t left the museum and it won’t leave until the city government and the Murnau Foundation decide what to do,” Felix-Didier said in a press release.

“MMSBC” was Ricky's religious/political statement of his day. It was set in a mans heart that was sharply divided between two women. Along with the highly anticipated Donkey Kong The Musical, the lost footage will be seen at MAGFest this year, where we will all celebrate and cheer and riot in the streets at the same time.

Several people have asked to do stories on the film, and so I thought I'd share with you guys the standard issue outline!

I've censored out a few names because...well...I want to retain some surprises as far as casting goes! Anyway, here it is...

Main Moon Productions returns with the debut of it's most ambitious project to date, MONSTER MANAGEMENT SECURITY BUREAU of CINCINNATI! Jonas Treadway refuses to grow up. In a last ditch effort to promote his comic book at the mid wests largest anime convention, something extraordinary happens that will alter his life forever! With a mix of Japanese sentai (think Power Rangers), convention culture, and all things geeky, MMP takes us on a ride that will surely make your girlfriends think twice about you "getting too old for this". The main character in any story must be someone the audience feels some emotional connection with, someone the audience loves or loves to hate. Jonas, for example, is a sweet innocent childlike man from Cincinnati who is thrust into extreme turmoil, and we see all of his emotions and feelings unfold as the movie progresses.

What a lot of people don't know is that I've had the idea for this picture in my head for almost 3 and 1/2 years. I was laughing about it earlier, when I told someone that the security team originally came to be, after finding an ad in the back of a city paper. It was also set in a world, where major cities like New York and LA, places that would seem like prime targets for monster invasions, already had established sentai squads. But one thing that never changed from draft to draft, was the underlining theme of being way past your time to move out of your parents house, and finding direction. I'm not going to come out and say that I've been dealt a bad deck of cards in my day, but in my profession, which is graphic design, it's pretty seriously cut throat.

So after we had a really good time making Bizarre Love Triangle, and met a lot of cool people at MAGFest, I figured the time was right to tackle the task that was way past due. During this time, I wasn't exactly working in the "field". I was doing some screen printing and gallery shows, and kept a steady paycheck rearranging stuff at grocery stores, also known as "visual merchandising". At this time, I wasn't quite sure if I wanted to stay in Cincinnati. My philosophy was always, I can be the big fish in a small pond. I had oppertunity after oppertunity to, as The Pet Shop Boys say "Go West" and try to work as a designer in Portland, where everything was sorta layed out for me, but something was just not right. I can't explain it.

I'm being kicked out off the computer, but I'll get to the point later...

Meeting of the Minds

Last night we had a long meeting about MAGFest and the likelihood of MMSBC being ready in time. If MMSBC is nowhere near completion, rest assured we have a nice little backup plan in place. Not only will we bring you a ton of behind the scenes clips from MMSBC, we will also have a full trailer, and an amazing original short.

I got an email asking if Bizarre Love Triangle will be shown again. Honestly, I doubt it, but you never know. That's just one of those thing I think we'll leave behind this year and keep in the vault.

I wish I could give details about the "back up plan" but it would take all of the fun out of it...trust me.

Friday, auditions begin for Wuan. This guy has the best lines in the movie. I hope we find a winner.

ALSO! Main Moon Productions has always been very much associated with the Underground Wrestling Alliance, a local indpendant wrestling promotion. It's been a few years, but from what I hear the UWA may be back in full force this fall! This is awesome news. It's been a great year for MMP so far!

It's been a very difficult month. From an exhaustng weekend trip with nerdcore's finest, to starting a brand new job teaching, I really had to take a step back and ask myself whether or not I was ready to commit to such a large project.

About 3 weeks ago, i began building the costume for the giant (SPOILER!) robot mech that appears near the end of the film. Have you ever had a dream or a goal that seemed unattainable? This was begining to seem that way.

Like PaRappa said, "You gotta believe". Simply believing in your skills, talents, strengths and desires will take you a long way.

An old friend from college once had a message on her voice mail that said, "Hard work will win over talent, when talent refuses to work hard." I'm really not sure that is her original quote, or if she got it from someone else. But I have never forgotten that statement. Every day it is so bizarre and strange how that automatically pops into my mind. I don't have to try to recall it, it is just there, written in indelible ink, engraved into my daily thought patterns. It's even caused me to spaz out on girlfriends who in my mind were "holding me back". True insanity. But sometimes you have to be insane to take on a task like this.

The greatest tragedy is the millions of people each day that give up on their dreams and goals because they fail to persevere through the hard times to reach the end. Many give up just before they have reached a point of seeing their dreams become a reality.

Tonight I'm going to be uploading an uncensored clip from the upcoming Super Buffet Cinema season 3.5 episode(not the special thats airing in Novem...oops!). The episode that I'm going to be turning into the studio soon, is actually going to be built around a lost season 3 Halloween special. I skimmed through the material last night and it's not that bad. Pretty funny stuff if I do say so myself.

We shot a lot of host segments talking to the first lady of MMP, Allison Pangallo. I think you guys will find it entertaining. The film that will be going along with the show is an old bootleg anime called DALLOS. I have yet to watch it, and I probably won't. I hope you guys hate it as much as I would.

Buuuuut, I'm hear today to speak exclusively to our NKY fans. Later this week I will have an update on the much anticipated Super Buffet Cinema special that will air later this year. Its been in the planning stages for quite sometime, and while we can't give the exact date out yet, let me just say that it's "significant". However, in the meantime (because waiting sucks) I'm working on some new content that further explores the costumes and will be throwing together some reworked reruns to turn into the studio for those boring summer nights.

So I'm getting more e-mails about this aborted Lupin thing than I ever imagined I would. As of right now it's up to 20,000+ hits on youtube. Crazy. Well, I have some good news and some bad news to report. The bad news is the only footage that was ever shot has been taped over. I needed a tape really bad for a wedding, and had no other option. Granted it wasn't all that impressive. Luke was so strung out and off of his game it wasn't even funny. Shane looked nothing like Goemon. Fujiko was much better looking on the internet than in real life. Bleh. You're not missing anything. Would I ever consider trying it again? Well, I wouldn't do it unless I had Josh and Luke as Jigen and Lupin, and I'd need to find the missing script, right? Good news is I found it, and I know it's the final draft because of this one piece right here:

Yikes! It was bad. I had intentions to cast a real asian as Goemon at one point and a friend from high school name Kara (pronounced Shara...dont ask) to play Fujiko, but she nor were any asians available at the time. Eventually I may post up the entire screenplay, but for now I'm knee deep in the sentai project. But, I do want to thank everyone for the attention and the emails, so keep the questions coming! I'll be back next week with our first sentai costume test! YESSSS.

Giant Shirts and Final Drafts!

Hey! Well, I have what I believe to be the biggest and most exciting news so far. After a successful 'help wanted' ad that was posted this weekend, the MMP crew spent hours searching for the right people to help us with the right kind of jobs, and so far the results have been overwhelming!

Just want to take the time to say thanks to all who offered help. We need it.

Next up, more scouting. This time, Magen and I went to the levee to see what we could find and what we found was...um...a giant t-shirt?

Hmmm. We plan on having giant robots. Will it be big enough?

We can only hope. And, if you thought the last bridge we found was cool...well, this one is a different kind of cool. Cool as is cold as in covered in snow.

So now that we've got a good start in the early planning stages, and the final draft of the script expected to be completed and sent out by the weekend things are going a-ok. However, just hours ago, we had no idea what to say when we found out about this...

Scout Troopers

So last week we spent a lot of time all over the city looking for some fun places to shoot. One thing I really want to capture on film this time around is the splendid Cincinnati skyline. So off we went looking for the most interesting places, and found a great spot on the other side of the river.

As the week goes on, we'll continue to check out more places. I'm really tired. I learned how to make a fried tofu dish and pancakes from scratch. What a weekend.

Man, I think it's time to play DDR again.

So, people have been asking me for details about the story and who is attached to the project thus far. Well, the anwser is...no one. Well, I take that back. We did start minor talks to a cat in upstate New York about donning some tights, but it's all going to depend on schedueling and what not.

Well, I take that back. One thing we have to make sure, is that in making this movie, we use the best video and audio equipment that we can. One major problem with BLT, was the audio. No no, the Shael Riley soundtrack was fine, but the dialog had to be completely over dubbed. Fear not, because in order to ensure we have the best in audio equipment, Magen and I decided to do our community a favor, and sign up for the very informative, and very free, public access field training classes!

This may come as a shock to you, but by taking the classes, not only do you get a crash course in using the equipment, you get to check it out and take it home. Rad. So support your local public access station!

Oh yeah, and if anyone is interested in decorating with one of my paintings, please contact me. My checking accouount is hurting. Bad.

Hey! Ricky here with Main Moon Productions! Now, before I get blasted by our critics for not having a "real" website and taking the easy way out, I do apologise. What this allows however is for everyone to easily check out the progress of what's sure to be a disaster in the making, MONSTER MANAGMENT SECURITY BEAURU OF CINCINNATI (MMSBC)! Yup. That's right, this is the follow up film that we'll begin working on soon. Sound exciting? No? Yeah, we're the people who brought you Bizarre Love Triangle...

But fear not. As much good feedback as I've received on BLT, MMSBC is way off from the whiny romp of yesterday. What you'll experience is the making of a sci-fi action comedy masterpiece, and we're glad to have you along for the ride.
